Vitrine is an Astro theme for a catalogue raisonné — an archive whose subject is objects, not posts. The page is a printed sheet rather than a card layout: a 1px rule grid, and inside each cell a plate, the photograph placed with room around it, a caption above and the wall label below.

How it reads

  • Bodoni Moda for the nameplate and the headings, Spectral for the notes and the apparatus
  • The plate: rules, cartellini, double-width cells for the objects that earn one, all in CSS
  • Nothing is rounded, nothing glows, and the only button inverts
  • Dark mode in light-dark() pairs — the plate cell keeps its paper — and a layout that holds down to 360px
  • Contrast measured rather than eyeballed: pnpm check:contrast fails on any pair below WCAG AA

In the free edition

  • Screens: home, catalogue with pagination, the object entry, collections and a collection, colophon, contact, privacy, terms, 404 and the feed
  • Type-safe content collections for objects and collections, in MDX or Markdown, checked at build time
  • Meta, Open Graph, JSON-LD, RSS, sitemap, robots.txt, and an analytics slot (Plausible, GA4, Umami)
  • Twenty-three object photographs from the Metropolitan Museum’s Open Access collection, CC0

What Pro adds

  • The second axis: index terms — maker, place, technique — an A–Z index and a chronology
  • Pagefind search over the entries, and a finder that narrows the catalogue and collection grids by term and decade
  • More than one plate per object: further captioned figures, an enlargement, and a register view of the same sheet
  • The apparatus: provenance, exhibition and literature registers, footnotes, section essays
  • A share card drawn for each object at build time, the object on the same paper as the page
  • Four colour presets, each moving paper, ink, rules and plate together

Under the hood

  • Astro and Tailwind CSS v4, static HTML with no client framework
  • AGENTS.md, a map of the edit points for Claude Code and Cursor
